The original version of this piece was one of the very first pieces I composed when I was still at secondary school. Twenty years later I updated it for a speciality concert given by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, of which I had been a member.
The work takes a few simple melodies and works round them in various ways. Although the melodies actually aren’t actually derived from folk music (I was young, and later decided not to change the title!) the piece does evoke something of the joy it was to have been lucky enough to grow up the far SW of England in Cornwall. After a slow and mysterious beginning (including a rewrite to include a choir section) various styles and soloists are introduced and the piece eventually winds up with a drum beat and a rousing finish.
