This piece was commissioned as a test piece by Jaren Hornmusikkforening in Norway to play at Norwegian Brass Band Championships 2020. The work is an abstract in one continuous movement. Length c. 17 mins.
VENOM is my reaction to the evils of the world. It is my reaction to the politicians filling the media with lies, and both racist and fascistic rhetoric. It is my reaction to seeing my country tear its self apart, falling prey to nationalistic rivalries and suffering at the hands of divisive and money hungry liars. It is my reaction to the continuing greed of politicians and corporations alike, which threatens to fundamentally change the way we live our lives on the only planet we can call home. It is my reaction to these bad things, and my reply; to the constant barrage of bad news and viciousness pushed down our throats and into our ears by endless social media. VENOM is both my portrayal of the political/environmental situation the world faces and my reply to those causing it.
It is my hope that the fleeting moments of serenity and beauty in the work go some way towards showing my belief that there is good in the world still and that we can, as one people, overcome the obstacles placed in our way.
